Ma’nene is a ritual practiced by the Toraja people of Sulawesi, Indonesia, in which families exhume the bodies of deceased relatives as part of an ongoing relationship with ancestors.

During the ceremony, remains are carefully cleaned, preserved, and dressed in new clothing. Family members gather to spend time with the deceased, often posing for photographs and presenting them within the village environment.

The practice reflects a cultural understanding in which the dead continue to hold a place within the social structure of the living. Rather than marking a final separation, death is integrated into ongoing family life through periodic rituals.
