Timkat is Ethiopia’s most important Orthodox Christian festival, celebrating the Epiphany—the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. Rooted in ancient liturgy and national pride, it is a deeply spiritual and spectacular event marked by processions, chants, colorful robes, and the ceremonial blessing of water.

In the historic city of Gondar, the Timkat celebration reaches its most iconic expression at Fasilides’ Bath, a 17th-century royal enclosure surrounded by stone walls and towering fig trees. On the eve of Timkat, priests carry replica Arks of the Covenant (Tabots)—sacred symbols of divine presence—from churches across the city in a grand nighttime procession, accompanied by hypnotic drumbeats, incense, and chanting crowds dressed in white.

At dawn, the waters of Fasilides’ Bath are blessed in a dramatic re-enactment of Christ’s baptism. As the sun rises, thousands of pilgrims gather around the stone pool, and with the priest’s blessing, they leap joyfully into the water—men, women, and children alike—cleansing themselves and renewing their faith in a powerful act of communal purification.
